BACKGROUND: Wiki Link!

PERSONALITY:
The setting in Gintama is sort of an odd one. It takes place during an alternate universe during the Bakumatsu period in which instead of Japan leaving isolation and reaching out to the Western world, they have instead opened up trading with aliens known as the "Amanto" who have ultimately taken over Japan and reign over the Bakufu government and the shogunate, using them as their puppets for domination. One of the changes to this new leadership has been putting a ban on swords, leaving many samurai jobless. This is no different for one "has-been" samurai, Gintoki Sakata, who has decided to open up his own business to pay his rent.
Gintoki is a freelancer, now, and is the founder and president of his business. Gintoki accepts any job. Even though he is lazy, nothing really seems to stand in his way once he is motivated and he will do what he can to accomplish the task at hand, showing he is very ambitious in his endeavors.... only with some complaining a long the way.

For traditional work that he is given, he is eager to do as little as possible for payment to spend on frivolous things such as Shounen JUMP and sweets, along with paying his rent. This is just some of the childish and silly traits about him, such as still being afraid of ghosts and the dentist. Gintoki knows he's childish and admits that he has the "soul of a boy," and sometimes tries to use this as an excuse for his behavior, dismissing his responsibility as an adult frequently.

His temper is pretty quick to rouse and his tongue is sharp with people, especially if they are strangers that he feels no attachment to. Gintoki can be rude and insulting when he gets in spats with people, not having any fear and initiating a physical fight with them when it boils down to it. He is very brave and bold with a strong personality that really needs to be taught some manners when talking to people ( and ladies. )

That aside, he really can be lazy or apathetic when it comes to certain situations. There really is no doubt about that; the way he sleeps too much or actually gives orders to his subordinates, Kagura and Shinpachi, instead of doing the task himself right off the bat. There is a lot of argumentative and immature conflict between these three, but all and all, Gintoki treats them like his only family left and considers life would be boring without them. They mean absolutely everything to him, and all together, they are a team with a mission at hand: run a business and make the clients happy.
Gintoki treasures them more than anything and would do anything for them. He considers having a family a very important aspect in life, which leads to the next point—

Gintoki is an orphan. No other family members are mentioned in the series, and the only father figure he ever had was his sensei, Yoshida Shouyou, who adopted him and raised him as his own child when he found him taking food from corpses who had died in the battlefield in a heated 20 year war between Amanto and samurai: The Jouishishi War.
When Shouyou-sensei was captured for breaking the law (running a school for samurai and talking about revolting against the Amanto-based government), Gintoki showed his first real signs of self-sacrifice to protect the thing most valuable to him. Gintoki joined the war in its final years in attempt to save Shouyou-sensei from captivity so he could bring him back into his world.

Gintoki was driven; driven to do what he could to protect the person he adored.

Protection and self-sacrifice is important to Gintoki. It's his way of life, and if he cannot protect or save somebody of worth, he finds himself useless. In the long run, he couldn't save his sensei and he was decapitated.
He has a hard time forgiving himself for this, even though it really couldn't be helped. It's a burden that Gintoki carries but he keeps it secretive to himself. Gintoki ultimately feels indebted and maybe doing good things for other people will help him redeem himself for what he has lost. This could be the reason why Gintoki is reckless with his own body, not caring about the fact he's practically diabetic or that he is an alcoholic. What good is a body and a soul that cannot protect? It doesn't say why Gintoki decided to draw back out of the war and seems to not do anything about reforming the world like his comrades, Katsura and Takasugi, but it may have to with his own remorse mentioned here. One thing is for certain, Gintoki doesn't have any interest of accomplishing things for traditional honor, refusing to commit seppuku during the war and "dying beautifully." He believes living beautifully with the cross you bear is even more honorable. To this day, Gintoki often reflects on his own personal bushido to make resolves in the situations he is put in, and they coincide with the words and lessons spoken by his teacher.

Gintoki has a dry sense of humor and often says things without much interest in them. It's his own way of guarding his emotions to keep them from showing, though he can be very animated as well. He gets enjoyment out of flippantly insulting others, though this could be his way of showing affection for them, as he gives a hard time to Kagura and Shinpachi and his other friends.
Another humorous aspect about him is the fact that the "straight-mans" often, questioning the logic of a situation and often getting frustrated and cranky when he doesn't understand. He can boss others around for an explanation even though sometimes his own antics are pretty ridiculous.

All and all, Gintoki has a heart of gold, even if his quirky personality is a little unusual than the typical shounen protagonist.

POWERS/ABILITIES:
✗ Skilled samurai: He's a legendary war hero who is feared by his enemies and grew up learning how to fight with a sword with his own fighting technique.
✗ Skilled at close combat & fist fighting: A good strong punch from him can send somebody flying across the room.
✗ Excellent physical endurance & strength— even though he's a mortal human being, he's hard to kill and has immense strength.
✗ Intelligent with military and battlefield tactics as a former patriot.
✗ Speed: He's said to be as fast as a ninja.
✗ Musical talent: He has a decent singing voice and has been noted to play the shamisen.
✗ 4th walling: Gintama is infamous for it, but Gintoki is known to especially do it. There will be an opt out post for this.

INVENTORY:
✗ A spare outfit he wore towards the end of the series.
✗ His nearly indestructible bokken, made from the wood of a celestial alien tree. This bokken can slash through almost anything and even though it is capable of splitting and breaking, it is very difficult to destroy.
✗ Sadaharu: An Inugami that is a large dog and major companion to Gintoki throughout the series. He is large but does fit in Gintoki's apartment where he lives. Please let me know if Sadaharu needs to shrink down to a normal dog size, but otherwise, he is this size for reference. He has the ability to turn into a monster when fed the wrong thing and serve as a shield against certain types of energy (such something called Altana in the series.)
✗ His Shounen JUMP collection.

MOONBLESSING: Cordis (cat.)
